One of my favorite movies of all time is the 1987 film Moonstruck, directed by Norman Jewison, and starring Cher, Nicolas Cage and Olympia Dukakis.
In the film, there is a scene where Olympia Dukakis wants to know, “Why do men chase women?” Take a look:
That’s it! Death. I think that is why we all want sex, because we are afraid of death. People fear death as the ultimate lonely state of being. Death is disconnected from life as we know it. What better way to connect with life than by having sex. After all, isn’t it the origin of our being?
Tomorrow I am meeting a fellow artist whose work also focuses on the way we live in deteriorating forms, aka our bodies. We are meeting at the Netherlands Funeral Museum, Tot Zover to see the exhibition Afterlife. I will report on it in tomorrow’s post. I have a feeling that my next project is getting ready to be born. It is of no surprise to me that it will come as the result of sex.
